Italian cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens)

Italian Cypress, botanical name Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’, brings a stately, formal look to any landscape. Native to southern Europe and Western Asia, Italian Cypress trees are an excellent choice for planting in tight areas. Featuring a narrow, columnar form, these evergreen trees are commonly seen planted in rows, lined up along driveways on properties throughout the Southwest, especially in coastal areas. The blue-green foliage adds a classic Mediterranean look to any landscape style.

During its first growing season, water regularly to help establish a healthy and robust root system. To water, deep soak around the root ball. Install emitters about one and a half feet from the trunk. If using a water hose, set the hose on a slow trickle so that it can thoroughly saturate the root ball. To help retain moisture, add a two to three-inch layer of mulch. Mulching is also a great way to prevent weeds. Be sure to keep mulch at least two inches away from the trunk. They do not like "wet feet.

Italian Cypress need very little pruning. Unless you want it to grow taller, do not cut the leader. When the leader is cut, it caps off. If you prune, do it in spring, never in the summer.
